You bought the Systainer3 M 89 or L 89, and the stock bins in the stock colors came in the box. For the first few weeks they're fine — then the gaps start showing. The depth is wrong for the fasteners you reach for most. Small hardware sits at the bottom of bins built taller than anything you'd ever put in them, so you're fishing two fingers down after a single screw. Half the volume in the box is holding air. And every bin looks like every other bin, so nothing tells you anything until you're close enough to read a label. The organizer works, technically. It just doesn't work for the specific mix of smalls that actually lives in your shop.
This is the piece that should have come in the box.
The bins follow a grid, and the grid does the math for you
The stock bins give you a fixed handful of sizes. If your parts happen to match them, you're set. SYS-ORG bins aren't a second handful — they're a range built on a single 25mm grid. Widths of 25, 50, 75, and 100mm. Lengths stepping the same way: 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, and 175mm.
That shared grid is the whole point. Because every bin is dimensioned to the same 25mm step, any combination tiles without leaving dead space. A run of narrow 25mm bins for screws sits flush against a wide 100mm bin for connectors, and the footprint adds up cleanly instead of leaving a useless sliver at the end of a row. You stop picking from a short list of what's available and start composing a layout out of what you actually need.
Measure the interior of your box, pick the bin sizes that match the parts you store, and lay them out on paper first — because everything tiles on the same grid, the arithmetic closes. The L 89 gives you more width to fill than the M 89, which usually buys you another column, but the method is identical either way: size the bins to the parts, then let the box tell you what fits.
Two things beyond footprint belong to that same spec. The standard bins come in two depths, and in a range of RAL colors alongside the default light grey. The first decides how easily you can reach your parts. The second decides how fast you can find them. Neither one is a finishing touch.
The purpose-built bins further down are a different matter. Those are shaped around what they hold rather than around the grid alone, so some come in a single depth and some in a narrower set of colors — worth checking the specific bin before you plan a layout around it.
Half-height is the default; full-height is the exception
The most common configuration mistake is reaching for full-height bins everywhere. The box takes two depths — 34mm half-height and 68mm full-height — and the instinct is to maximize volume by going deep on all of it.
Full-height bins do hold more per position. But with small parts, that depth costs you twice.
The first cost is reach. You can see the parts at the bottom perfectly well; it's getting them out that's the problem. A 68mm bin holding a shallow layer of M4 screws means pinching down past your knuckles with two fingers to pick one out — and that chopstick maneuver, repeated across a day of reaching into the same box, adds up to real time.
The second cost is space. A deep bin holding a thin layer of parts is mostly air, and interior volume is the one thing the box can't give you more of. Every position spent on empty headroom is a position not holding something else.
So half-height is the practical default for most bench and jobsite work: parts sit within finger reach, and you spend only the depth you actually use. Full-height earns its place where the part fills the depth anyway — longer fasteners standing on end, or bulk consumables you refill in quantity rather than pick from one at a time. Mostly half-height, with full-height reserved for the positions where bulk stock lives.
Four layouts that hold up
The fastest way to understand the system is to configure it for real work. Four that come up constantly:
Centrotec and driver sets. This one starts with a warning, because it changes what you need to buy. A Festool or Tanos Bit Cassette does not drop into the M 89 or L 89 on its own — left to itself, a cassette only has a home in a Systainer lid attic. Fasteners with a dedicated driver. When a screw always pairs with one bit, a plain bin splits them across two positions. The payoff shows up on the way out the door: an empty channel tells you you're out of that bit while you're still in the shop, rather than on site without it. Color-code these by fastener family and the bin does double duty — you've read it before you've read the label. The channel bins also run to sizes the standard range doesn't: 125mm widths and 200mm lengths, for the fastener you buy in bulk and never want to run out of mid-job.
Oscillating blades. These have a purpose-built answer rather than a general one. Mixed fasteners. This is where the system pays off most, and where color does work that size alone can't. With smalls, the problem isn't fitting them, it's telling them apart fast: a bin of M5 socket caps and a bin of #10 panheads look identical until you're close enough to read a label. Assign one color to metric, another to imperial, a third to whatever project hardware is passing through this week, and you find the right bin by scan. Where SYS-ORG stops
